Frequently Asked Questions

Why are some countries not included in the quiz?

We carefully selected 94 countries to make the quiz engaging and manageable. Our goal was to focus on a diverse range of countries that would be fun to sort and recognize without overwhelming you with too many options. This way, you can enjoy a challenging but doable experience!

How is my score calculated?

Your score reflects how well you ordered countries by area, evaluated across six continents. Youโ€™ll see this visualized in a radar chart after taking this quiz.

Essentially, for each continent, we check how accurately youโ€™ve sorted the countries within it. Your score for each continent is a percentage out of 100, and these are added together for your final score out of 600.

We use a concept called "Inversion Count" to measure your ordering accuracy for each continent. Imagine each country has its correct position in the list (from largest to smallest within that continent). Now, consider the order you provided. An "inversion" happens when a country appears before another country that should come *before* it in the correct sequence. Letโ€™s illustrate this within a single continent:

Correct Order in a continent: [A, B, C, D]

Your Order in that continent: [B, A, C, D]

In this example, we have one inversion: B comes before A, when it should be after it.

Formal definition:

An inversion is a pair of indices (i, j) in your list such that:

  • i < j (meaning i comes before j in your order)
  • But: CorrectOrder[i] > CorrectOrder[j] (the value at position 'i' should be placed later than that in position 'j' in the correct order)

The score for *each* continent is calculated like this:

Continent Score = 100% - (Inversion Count / Maximum Possible Inversions) x 100%

Your Final score is simply the sum of all six continent scores, ranging from 0 to 600.

Key Points:

  • Zero Inversions on a continent = Perfect Score (100 for that continent): If all countries on a continent are in the exact correct order, youโ€™ll have zero inversions and a score of 100 for that continent.
  • Maximum Possible Inversions: This occurs when your list within a continent is in the reverse of the correct order. More inversions on a continent mean a lower score for that continent.
  • Relative Ranking is Key: The score for each continent depends on *how accurately you place each country relative to the others on that same continent*, not on their absolute position across all continents.

Understanding how inversions are counted helps you see how your ordering choices affect your final score! Try your best, Good luck!
